Ion programs are compiled with the same compiler as normal asm programs, but a different include file is used. Ion programs are assembly language programs, but they require a shell to run since they use external subroutines.

there are a few more differences
ion was designed to allow porting from 83-83plus and vice versa, with little or no change to the code, and it also allows asm programs to run with significantly less RAM than regular asm programs, as well as neumerous memory optimization features which allow you to greatly reduce the size of your asm programs
