St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, which is exactly one block west of my house, caught fire at two am this morning and burnt to the ground! The firetrucks from 20 districts didn't use their sirens so I didn't hear anything. I slept through it. I woke up at 6 AM to hear my mom say that there were helecopters hovering overhead for the past hour. I got scared and I turned on the radio only to hear that the church a block away from my house had burnt down. If I had awaken at the height of the fire, I would have seen the huge flames from my rear bedroom window, but I slept through the whole thing. Several streets around the church are currently shut down. This isn't the church I go to ever day, but I do go there every once in a while to visit Jesus in the tabernacle. The Catholic Church I go to is about 3 miles away. Related links: www.nbc5.com/news/1308148/detail.htmlwww.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-020318churchfire.story?coll=chi%2Dnews%2DhedBob M.

that is terrible, what i don't get is why every church fire i've heard about, the church burns to the ground, they're never slightly damaged, only destroyed (i know that they's almost definetly been some cases where it wasn't destroyed, but i've never heard of any)

In the last two months, my town in CA has experienced three fires that I know about.
One in a school: Resulted in the distruction of two maintanance vehicles, and a maintanance shead. Cause according to investigators: Arson
One in Fallbrook: Destroyed a few hundred homes, the air was black for a few days. Cause: I don't know
One in Camp Pendleton: Out of controll controlled burn. I would think that the millitary could have put it out in less than 3 days, but no instead they just let it burn throughing ash into the air which got on everything out side.
Oh well, it just shows that humans still arn't smart enough to play with fire!

Usually there isn't many firs, and when there is one it gets put out in less than an hour. It has just been recently that there was a problem. The air is clear now!
If you mean Mexico when you say the south, then yes, that country is always causing problems with this one. They start fires along the border, and it is always up to the California fire fighters to put it out to save the boarder; and their Government always asks for help and this country usually provides it.
It is really strange that the average person on the United States side of the boarder makes 40 times more money each year than a person living on the Mexican side of the boarder.

Not really. Mexico is slowly turning into a very large third-world country.

um i said i'd hate to see how it is down south because the averge southerner is a complete idiot (and just about everyone on my father's side of the family is a hillbillie) and the ones who aren't morons were originally from up north, btw i'm pretty sure the reason that mexican's make less money is cause their economy is shot, 20,000 pesos is roughly $10

Actually, after living in both Northern California and Southern California, I have noticed that there are fewer hillbillies in the South. I know that everyone thinks that a southern accent really comes from the south, but it doesn't. What state do you live in?
[glow=red,2,300]It doesn't really matter where you live, you are bound to live among a bunch of idiots! I espessially can't stand to be around hillbillies, they where their stupid looking cowboy hats and alagator boots with the spurs and talk half as fast as a regular human. When they speak, they make them selves soundl like they have an IQ of 60; most are not smart enough to mentally subtract 37 from 529.[/glow]
I will tell you one thing though, the literacy rate in the south is only about 80% due to the number so Mexicans that have crossed the border legally or illegaly. In northern California, the literacy rate is over 99%.
20,000 pesos is actually worth about $1,000, but may be worth as much as $3000 to as little as $300 each day depending on how screwed up their Federal Government is each day! I would be pissed off if the price of goods in this country moved up and down each day. The nice thing about this country is that the prices of goods hardly ever change, and we get paid more each year!
The biggest price differences in this country is in realestate, it varies State to State It costs about $300,000 to buy a house in California, how much does a house cost in your state on average?

[glow=red,2,300]*GROWLS AT THE BOTH OF YOU* [/glow] I live in Texas! One of your little "hillbillie" confederate states! Some of the people I know are the people that you're bashing! I can tell you right now that we're not all f'ing stupid. It's horrible that you would reduce yourselves to that kind of biggotry. Especially you, Jbirk! From Chris it's become expected, but from you, man? That's disappointing...

Um...Getting back to the main topic...it turned out that it was arson. A former parishoner, a 21 year old kid set the fire. His mom used to teach at St. Michael's School. After he lit the vestments on fire in the church, he went to his next door neighbor's house and tried (but failed) in setting his neighbor's house on fire (his neighbor's house burnt to the ground a year ago and probably was built this time with fireproof materials.) The church has since been bulldozed to the ground. Parish members have sent out this letter asking help: their previous church was pretty, but they are afraid they are going to build an ugly church to replace it. Here is the letter:

I just want to say too thinkgs:
One: Not all country people are stupid, I actually know a lot of smart ones; and that I need to stop judgeing people.
Two: Bob, I am glad they found the guy whom caused the church to burn to the ground. Hopefully the authorities make sure that he doesn't commit such a horrible crime again.

well...at least they caught the person who started that fire, they never caught the guy who burned down the church in wilmington...i just realized something, when my uncle's church flooded because of a burst pipe, the insurance company didn't pay for the damages because they classified it as an act of god, ironic isn't it...btw isn't it only floods caused by nature that are supposed to be classified as acts of god?

Then they should sue their insurance company! If insurance is paid for, then it covers damages...
